    I've attempted:

    class Test_General extends \TestCase
    {
    public static function _init()
    {
    \Cache::delete_all();
    }

    // and tried before()
    }

    class Test_Article extends Test_General
    {
    ... tests here
    }

    I've also tried extending the core with a TestCase class with no joy.

    Can this not be extended in this way?

    The tests work fine btw, just wanted a before function for these tests.

    the "Fuel" way of doing things doesn't work with tests, they are loaded and run by PHPUnit.

    Check the PHPUnit documentation on prepping methods, or look at existing tests such as for Arr or Date.
