2.0 is quite some time off. We're aiming for a first beta sometime this summer.
You can just use 1.1 (there's a 1.2 on the way based on the current 1.1/develop, so I suggest you start with that, and not with the 1.1 release version).
For the upgrade from 1.x to 2.0 we will try to make it as simple as possible, and provide a clear and documented upgrade path. We all have applications running on 1.x, so it's in our intrest to make this process as painless as possible.
