I am following guide in documentation on how to extend validation class (http://docs.fuelphp.com/classes/validation/validation.html#extending_validation). There is an example on how to check for the unique field value in DB and works fine... But using this same validation rule for editing causes a problem. It also checks the value against itself and validation therefor always fails. Any tips on how to avoid this?

What's the deal with this? I can't figure out how to set this up without doing a hacky manipulation of the validation object prior to running it - it would be nice if this could happen straight from the validation rules set in the static $_properties array.

You can't really do that using a validation rule, since those rules validate a value in isolation.

Solving this would require a hack, one way or another, because you need to pass DB or ORM info to it, and a PK if it's an existing record.

You could do that as part of the rules parameters, and pass the PK fieldname as well, so the validation rule can fetch that using $this->input().
