Fuel 2.0
  • How far off is Fuel 2.0? I am working on a new project and would obviously like to release on the latest version of Fuel. How stable is the current dev version? Is it too risky to start building upon?
    Thx. Neil.
  • 2.0 is still alpha. Kernel and Core are stable, but the API isn't fixed yet. Most of the functionality of the support classes isn't ported or rewritten yet, and not a lot of work is spend on backward compatibility (the legacy classes). There's still a lot on the roadmap that we still have to start working on. There is also no documentation available other then the API docs. Having said that, Jelmer has been running 2.0 for all his production applications (which was needed to flesh out any issues in the core), with the help of some external packages (like Doctrine for ORM). So we're making progress, but I wouldn't start building a new app on 2.0 as of yet. It is our goal to make the migration from 1.x to 2.0 as painless as possible.

I find it interesting that he is using Doctrine ORM. I am currently deciding whether to use FuelPHP ORM or Doctrine, with the intention of upgrading to FuelPHP version 2 later. Would you recommend using Doctrine now in version 1.2?
  • I personally don't like Doctrine at all (and that's an understatement), so perhaps I'm the wrong person to ask. But in terms of continuity, unless some other developer comes forth to take over development of our ORM, it's future is bleak, and I would suggest not making any long term plans with it. We're still thinking about possible alternatives or solutions, but 2.0 will definately get a Doctrine integration package.
